If you haven't seen the new trailer for Almost Adults, you have to. Here it is. This movie looks absolutely incredible and adorable, and you should definitely see it when it comes out. (Is there going to be a full post dedicated to Almost Adults when the release date gets closer? You bet your ass there will be.) But for now, there was one line in the trailer that made me know I was definitely going to like this movie:
Cassie: "you hate sports!"
Mackenzie: "I like girls who play sports!"
So, without further ado, let's spotlight five awesome lesbian athletes!
Snowboarding: Belle Brockhoff
Belle Brockhoff is a lesbian snowboarder that came out publicly in protest of the Russian anti-gay laws pre-Sochi.
*heart eyes emoji*. She's Australian by birth and adorable by trade, and was one of 7 out athletes to compete in Sochi. You go, Belle!
MMA: Liz Carmouche
Liz Carmouche was the first openly lesbian MMA fighter in the UFC.
A World of Dreams:Voices from the OUT100
She's strong, powerful, and absolutely amazing. She sports a rainbow mouthguard in her fights, and continues to be kick-ass to this day.
Basketball: Layshia Clarendon
Layshia is a black, gay, masculine-presenting, devoutly Christian lesbian. Interesting, right?
One of the most common questions Layshia is asked in interviews is about her relationship with God and the Christian faith, to which she responded in The Player's Tribune something really cool: “It’s the place where I don’t have to carry the burden of being black in America. I don’t have to carry the burden of walking into a bathroom and being mistaken for male. I don’t have to carry the burden of wondering whether people are judging me morally for being gay or not.” <3 <3 <3
Beach Volleyball: Natalie Cook
Natalie is an Australian beach volleyball player, and the first Australian woman to compete at five Olympic Games!
She's a multiple-gold medal Olympic athlete, and is married to another beach volleyball player, Sarah Maxwell. A decorated Olympic athlete that's also beautiful and gay? Sign me up.
Soccer: Abby Wambach
Abby Wambach might be the best female soccer player of all time. She has competed for many years on the Women's National Team and in the World Cup, completing unforgettable plays such as her memorable header to win the 2011 World Cup match against Brazil.
My personal favorite moment is the adorable kiss that she shared with her wife, Sarah Huffman, after her most recent (and last) World Cup win. Watch the video, it's going to make you squeal.
So, Almost Adults rang true for me as I'm sure it did for tons of other queers: I love girls that play sports. Do you know of any other amazing lesbian athletes that deserve recognition? Tweet at me and let me know!
(special thanks to the Wikipedia pages of all athletes listed above!)
